“I, a universe of atoms, an atom in the universe”. - Richard Feynman
Some ask “WTF’s with the name ‘OnlyAtoms’, what’s with the science stuff, what does that have to do with running?!” (#rungeeks) We can explain, though we’d rather let it puzzle you. Here's a hint:
There’s an inherent need for humans to connect & interact, just as subatomic particles – the smallest, fundamental matter of nature – can’t be observed alone. When you break it down, humans, and the whole universe, are made up of one thing: energy. Atoms, “star stuff”, particles, however you think of it – a universal energy we all share. (Didn't make that up, it's physics).
You know the feeling when you run, hear your breath, wind blowing by your ears…a sunny morning, in a city of 8 million, 8 gazillion cars honking...you hear birds chirping, see the sun rising, airplanes fly through clouds...you feel your brain waking, experience that “being in the now” feeling, moments of peace and happiness in a crazy city.
Or when running a race, maybe struggling a bit halfway though, but running with others keeps you going. You make eye contact with a runner who’s been unknowingly “pacing” you. You seem to understand each other, why you're out there, why you keep coming back for more. There’s an energy, a connection. We feel alive, happy, at peace, all feels good in the world. Isn't that the real reason we keep running?
Whether running 6 minute miles or 13 minute miles, we're all the same, running for the same reasons. We are just energy within a universe of energy, OnlyAtoms. Give it some thought, maybe it will click someday during a run.
