Black Friday is here. Beloved by some, and dreaded by others (we know, we've worked retail), by this time, people are already out hunting for a new tv or the hot new toy. As part of our commitment to sustainability and conscious consumerism, we've come up with a few tips to help you make mindful choices on this mother of all shopping days.
1) Buy better quality.
Are you looking at buying something that you're going to need to re-buy on next year's Black Friday sale? Instead of purchasing something that's not going to last very long, choose to put that money towards a better quality version of the product you want. Better quality means paying a higher price in the short-term, but in the long-term you will get far more use (and enjoyment) out of the product, and you will reduce your carbon footprint. For example, wearing the same awesome tank top over a long period of time means fewer tank tops in landfills, as those tops don't always get recycled, and even when they do, recycling polyester into more PET fabric can have a significant negative impact on the environment.
At OnlyAtoms, we buy local because we make local, and making local matters. Buying local is a step towards a smaller carbon footprint, supporting small business, and means you're paying for the product, not for that product's marketing budget. Mass-market retailers prices pay for their mass-marketing budgets. Local brands prices pay for the product itself.
3) Buy ethical.
Do your research. Was the product you're about to purchase made ethically? Was it made by happy humans? Were those humans paid fairly for their work? Is the money you're paying going to support a good cause? We know the names of the people who make our running shorts, we stop by our factory and have a coffee and chat with them to see how things are going, and we believe that's how it should be.
4) Consider energy consumption.
If you're buying clothes, consider how you're going to care for them- clothes that you can wash in cold water and air dry, just like all of our OnlyAtoms products, take much less energy (and money!) to care for than items that need to be dry cleaned. Plus, washing clothing in cold water and air drying is much gentler on your clothing than using hot water and a hot dryer, meaning you'll get more miles out of your new shorts. Washing isn't the only way you can make more sustainable choices... Considering energy consumption goes for appliances too- research the energy rating of any home appliances you're looking at purchasing! More stars = more energy efficient = less moola and less carbon footprint in the long run (pun intended).
5) Donate money to a cause you care about.
This season is all about gratitude and giving, so what better way to give back than donating to a cause you care about. Giving back is so important to us that for our Black Friday special, we're donating 5% of any purchase over +$96 to any 501(c)(3) charity of your choice. Spark change, inspire good.
How are you spending (pun intended) your Black Friday?
