Running has helped Carmen Martinez get through some tough times in her life, just like us! Now that she's conquered few half marathons, she's sharing her Runner's Life story here...
Describe what RUNNING is to you, in 5 words or less.
Liberating, makes me feel powerful.
How did you get started running and/or what inspired you to run?
I started running in 2006 because I was tired of working out at the gym. But after I felt like my lungs were burning, I gave it up and said I would never do it again. I thought, who puts themselves through this type of torture? It wasn’t until a couple of years later, that I was trying to get over a VERY nasty breakup that I discovered running again. I remember that first day that I got on the treadmill and ran as fast as I could and when I finished, I started to feel better. I never looked back. Now I try to find new paths and parks in New Jersey and everywhere I travel to run.
Your favorite running moment?
My favorite running moment was when I crossed the finish line at the 2013 NYC Half. I remember getting in through the lottery and had no expectation of getting in. This is my favorite moment because this was my very first half marathon, I trained and focused for 4 months. Needless to say, I was pretty emotional when I crossed the finish line. All that hard work paid off.
Also, running through Times Square at the halfway point, like I owned the streets of Manhattan was a perk too! ;-)
Who/what do you think you'd be like today if you did NOT run?
It sounds cliché, but if it wasn't for running, I would feel lost. I was just going through the motions in life. When I re-discovered it, I found that I had something that I loved and it helped me use that goal mentality to reach other goals. I’ve found that because of running, I’m a much more determined person than before.
Why do you keep on running? and running and running...
I keep running because it makes me feel powerful. In the process, It’s been my excuse to get out there and travel and see new places. In April, I traveled to Disney World to run the Star Wars Half (This was my first time EVER at Disney). Along the way, I have made friends and met people who share my
enthusiasm for running. More recently, I joined a running group with Lolë (which is a women’s yoga and running apparel company) and we run all over downtown on Monday nights. For me, there’s no better way to start off my week.
What is your favorite post run/race indulgence?
- Having a beer
- Having a burger
- Taking a VERY long hot shower
Yes, in that order!
Oddest, most unusual, weirdest running experience.
None so far!
