Turkey Thursday. Black Friday. Small Business Saturday. Cyber Monday. Tutu Tuesday (it's actually "Giving Tuesday"). WTF Wednesday. ThankGodItsOver Thursday.
Last year we wrote this article about how we felt about Black Friday & Cyber Monday. In honor of this insane consumeristic society we're living in, we're writing about it again. I know we're not REI closing for Black Friday and don't have the kind of impact as they do with their (totally amazing) #OptOutside campaign, but we are passionate about conscious consumerism, supporting locally made products and local businesses, and want to address the BS around Black Friday and what.
We've spent almost 15 years working in the garment industry and retail business, and seen many sides of it. We can break down in detail how much it costs to make clothing in mass quantities in an off-shore, third-world country. We can tell you how brands build the costs of steep discounts into their products from the beginning so they can make consumers think they're getting a bargain during sales like the Black Friday/Cyber Monday "discounts". Ideally if there wasn't such as thing as all these discounts and sales, prices could be more honest (and lower!!) from the beginning. If we weren't trained to be Human Trampling bargain hunters, and had more Radical Transparency with pricing up front, then we could make smarter buying decisions.
BUT, there's a dilemma here, right? We are producing and selling products to you -- of course we want you to buy our goods!
As you know, we make all our running gear in our family owned factory in NYC, and have written extensively about #RunLocal and our locally made goods here in this blog series, and here, and here, and here. So why would we talk about all this? The key here is to get you thinking. Think about what you're buying and why. Think about these discounts and what's behind them. Think about what kind of products and brands you want to support, and the impact those have on the people who make them, the communities where they're made, and the world and environment in general. Consciously consuming.
In honor of "Black Friday", we're not going to run any steep discounts, we're not giving you 5000% off, and not going to make people line up at 4am to buy anything. We're trying something new and fun, though! We have a new kind of Pay What You Want thing we're going to try. If you've read this far, you'll be lucky enough to participate! Here's the deal:
We're offering a Pay What You Want special to celebrate the insane mega-extravaganza of absurd consumeristic holiday shopping "specials" lasting all week month long ! ! !
We're serious. Go to www.OnlyAtoms.com. Find some running gear, running clothes or gifts for runners you like. Then we want you to write us & tell us how much you want to pay for the item you want. Tell us why you feel it should cost that much. While you're at it, tell us how much you want to pay to have us ship it to you. Then we'll review & if we agree that it's fair, we'll sell & ship it to you for that price. YES WE ARE SERIOUS.
Here are some more good articles about buying locally made products, supporting small and local businesses, and conscious consumerism:
What do you think of our viewpoint, do you agree? Do you care? Or do you just want whatever's cheapest? HAPPY THANKSGIVING! ! !
