…Okay, people, thanks for the race support and all but if you’re going to scream those cheers at me, you might as well keep your mouth shut, right? (Who here has thought this before?!? WE HAVE!)
When you hear your supporters on the side line say, “You look great,” don’t you just want to hurl? You know deep down that all they are doing is trying to be supportive, however, that cheer is obviously a lie, and it really doesn’t give you any motivation to go faster or to keep going any harder. You have sweat is dripping down your face, mud is caked in weird splotches all over your legs, grass tickles the backs of your ankles, you probably have a runners wedgie, maybe an untied shoe, who knows what your hair is doing, and you’re probably making that face with your mouth open wide, as if you’re in a ton of pain… and then you hear “you look great.” So you think to yourself, “Yeah right,” and then you feel just as bad as you did 30 seconds ago before they gave you that cheer in the first place...
And then later you hear, “You’re almost there” from your sweet friend who knows nothing about races, but you don’t have time to take that into consideration so you start speeding up to finish strong. Fifteen minutes go by and you’re about to die because you definitely were not almost there. Biggest and most cruel lie ever. That one makes you want to grab your supportive friend and have them finish the race with you since they thought you were that close to being done. Unless it’s a coach, or someone who is 110% positive that the runner is VERY close to the finish line, no one should ever use this line. Right?? (Here a whole post from Relentless Forward Commotion about this!)
So, how DO you cheer on your runners?
After all, they are working much harder than you are on the sidelines cheering, so what can you do, or better yet, what can you say?
I think the best thing someone has yelled at me was “Run like you stole something.” It wasn’t like it motivated me to run much faster but it made me laugh and it assured me that I had people trying their hardest to support me. After all, it is the thought that counts. But this one was good because it wasn’t cliche and I liked the quirkiness it had to it. Of course, we've all seen these funny running race signs....and this whole website Best Race Signs is devoted to this!
A runner from the University of Oregon, Jordan Hasey, had quite the supporter who came prepared with all kinds of random things to keep her runner going. With a race slogan like, “You’re one third of the way through a Friends episode,” she made sure her runner felt the support. (FYI, this Friends Running Episode is one of the best EVER!) Listen to what she has to say, and then share with us some of the best and weirdest things you’ve heard at races to keep you going!
