Give dad the gift of running, fitness and health this Father's Day! We're here to help you find the perfect Father's Day gift for dad, whether he's into running, grilling, golf, gadgets, or getting his drink on. (Yes, whiskey has been shown to be "healthy". Uh, okay, maybe Buzzfeed isn't such a good source for health information...)
THE BEST RUNNING BOOKS EVER: Like Meb For Mortals: How to Run, Think, and Eat like a Champion Marathoner by Meb Keflezighi, one of the greatest runners ever, of course. Or Eat and Run by Scott Jurek, the badass Ultramarathon runner. Or our favorite running book we mention in, like, every post here, ChiRunning (A Revolutionary Approach to Effortless, Injury-Free Running).
THE VIBRATING FOAM ROLLER: Yes, it is for real! The HyperIce Vyper, a 3 Speed Vibrating Foam Roller. We tried it last week and O.M.G. WOW. It's pretty close to the "power plate", if you've ever had that in PT (we did, back when we use to get injured, before Chi Running came along...)
COOL RUNNING & WORKOUT GEAR: our own OnlyAtoms Men's Running Gear, Shorts and Running Tank Tops....or, easy, an OnlyAtoms GIFT CARD! Only the best, coolest running gear made for dad, designed by real runners, in Brooklyn and all manufactured in NYC.
RUNNING, BIKING & WORKOUT FUEL: from Hammer Nutrition. We recommend Hammer because they make clean, wholesome products with just the correct amount, no unnecessary extra added amounts, of sugar and salt. Their stuff works!
CUSTOM 3D PRINTED HEADPHONES: Custom headphones from Normal. Earphones that don't fall out, yes, for real...because they're custom-fit 3D-Printed earphones made to fit your ear! AND, made just for dad right here in NYC. Sooo damn cool. To go with it, get dad....
NEW MUSIC TO RUN TO: Dad doesn't even need to think about what to listen to, he just needs to get this app and go workout with a Spring Moves monthly subscription. So, get dad an Apple iTunes gift card and tell him to download Spring in the iTunes store.
WHISKEY TAXONOMY GLASS SET: "The Man Varieties of Whiskey" from Brooklyn's own Pop Chart Lab. Isn't this just so cool? We love it, and we know a glass on the rocks after a long run is really what dad wants. Give these whisky glasses together with a bottle of...
GREAT BOURBON & WHISKEY: from some of our favorites like Vermont's Whistle Pig Rye and Brooklyn's own King's County Distillery. Who doesn't want a drink after a tough race or a long marathon? Plus, booze is great for recovery...so we say.
LOCALLY MADE GOLF BALLS: Golf is good cross-training! Right?? Eh, who cares, it's fun. Okay not sure where these are made, but for most of us, USA made is more local than made in China! Both our late dad and current step-dad golf. They always ask for golf balls as gifts. So boring, yes. But, practical too. So, if you must, buy made in the USA golf balls such as these Bridgestone Recycled Golf Balls (made in USA!)
RECLAIMED HOCKEY STICK GRILL SET: Wow, this Hockey Stick Grill Tool Set is pretty damn cool, and made in California. Who doesn't want a big hunk of meat after a long run? Although we eat 98% vegetarian, the one thing we crave after a marathon (besides a drink!) is a grilled burger. Mmmm, burgers. We found this gift on Brooklyn-based UncommonGoods, a cool ecommerce site, where you can filter to find gifts only made in the USA.
THE REMAINING 7 OF OUR 20 FATHER'S DAY GIFTS: Okay, so, that wasn't quite 20 gift items, but we'll use the remaining 7 to get deep and personal here, since it's what's really important...even more important than running and gifts! While you could buy your dad one of our super cool gifts for Father's Day, and you still should, also take some time to give him 7 reasons why you're happy to have him as a dad, or give him 7 hours of your time, or go for a 7 mile run with him, or write 7 apologies for each year you were a total brat to him (ages 13-19), or cook him a 7 course meal.
We lost our dad 10 years ago, and we wish we had just 7 more minutes with him. While he's always in our heart, we're glad we had many years of quality time with our dad (i.e., all years before and after the teenage brat years). So, of course now we like to remind others that our parents are only around for a limited time (obviously, like all of us) so appreciate that time as much as you can now, spend time together now, to tell them you love them now.
Happy Father's Day!!
